In 1920, Ida Pauline Rolf received her Ph.D. in biochemistry from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University and performed research in organic chemistry at the Rockefeller Institute. Propelled to find solutions to her own health problems in a holistic manner, she spent many years studying and experimenting with different systems of healing and manipulation.
The idea that proper alignment, physiologic function and anatomical structure are related is the basis of many of these healing methods. Dr. Rolf believed that the imbalances in structure, as well as the effects of gravity, placed demands on the body's network of soft tissues: muscles, fascia, tendons and ligaments, thereby creating compensations throughout the body structure. Structural Integration focuses on the fascia that surrounds the muscle rather than a massage which concentrates on the muscles themselves. The fascia surrounds the muscles, bones and organs in the body. The fascia gives muscles their shape and the body its structure. Structural Integration aligns and balances the body by lengthening and repositioning the fascia. Structural Integration helps to lengthen the fascia to allow the muscles to move more efficiently. When restricted fascia is released and lengthened the body can return to its structurally optimal position. All sessions of Structural Integration are a very personal process. It is important to remember that because no two people are alike, their experience and the benefits will never be exactly the same. Research has demonstrated that Rolfing Structural Integration: creates a more efficient use of the muscles; allows the body to conserve energy; creates more economical and refined patterns of movement; ¨significantly reduces chronic stress and changes in the body structure; significantly reduced the spinal curvature of subjects with lordosis (sway back); and enhances neurological functioning.
