AcuDetox Therapy
AcuDetox is a 5-point auricular acupuncture treatment protocol established by the National Addiction and Detoxification Association (NADA).  Acupuncture is preformed by placing thin, sterilized needles into both ears.  AcuDetox is best given in a group setting for about 45 minutes.  It is thought that the energy of the group helps provide an added benefit of knowing that you are not alone in the therapeutic process and adds to the calm of others in the group.

The most research concerning AcuDetox has been in the treatment of substance abuse, alcoholism, nicotine use, and even sugar abuse.  AcuDetox has been used for anxiety, depression, irritability, and some other problems where there is a mind-body disconnect.  AcuDetox has reportedly helped patients with the symptoms of withdrawal, feeling inner peace or calm, sleeping better, are not as anxious, and feel more present in the moment.  It allows a person to really start to explore what aspects of life brought them to this current moment in time.

The two most commonly asked questions about AcuDetox are:  (1) Will the treatment hurt, and (2) What should they expect or feel?  The first question is relatively easy to answer.  Yes, usually there is a minor pinching sensation as the needle enters the skin that soon goes away quickly.  There are some points that may not even hurt as the needles are placed in the skin.  Each treatment can also be different, where points that have not been tender in the past can become tender.

The second question is harder to answer.  Every person is different and will experience each AcuDetox treatment differently.  Most feel calmer at some point during the treatment.  Others it may take awhile even after the treatment is completed.  On some occasions the treatment can cause emotions to come up.  For some patients the needles help them “feel” again.  It can be a strange sensation when you suddenly reconnect with your body in the moment or with your feelings in the moment.
